Staying Healthy Behind a Desk

By: Law Offices of Peter J. Lamont

A lot of research is indicating that having a desk job will actually kill us.  A sedentary lifestyle is the biggest threat facing today's workforce as almost everything can be done right at one's desk.  This makes it increasingly difficult for professionals to maintain their health in an office-dominated world.  Here are a few tips to help you climb the corporate ladder without breathing too heavily.

Ditch the Conference Table
Who says that a meeting needs to happen inside?  Take your department meeting to a local park or simply walk around the block while you discuss the quarterly results.  Staying active during a meeting will keep people from dozing off (not that bar graphs aren't exhilarating!) and can burn some extra calories while being productive.

Ditch Your Inbox
You probably send at least hundreds of e-mails each week.  Next time you get the chance, take a look and see how many of those messages are to your coworkers in the same building as you.  There is nothing wrong with physically delivering  a message and it can sometimes be faster as e-mail conversations can draw out a simple discussion
Ditch Your Office Chair
The last thing you need is to look like Quasi Modo after practicing poor posture 40 hours a week at your desk.  Although you may get some stares at first, try out a standing desk and see if it could be a decent fit for your work routine.  Going back to the walking meetings, you will be much more awake and potentially more productive.  Standing burns more calories and keeps the blood flowing.  Don't forget to stand up straight!
