The intent of Safety Week this year is to raise appreciation for the correct installation and use of child seats in the vehicles used to transport our most precious cargo - our children.
To this end, many police departments and safety partners around the nation are offering free clinics on the correct selection, installation and use of car seats.
Purchasing the correct seat is a major concern but the proper installation and use is sometimes misunderstood by those using them on a daily basis. Issues include loose installation and harness, improper positioning of the harness and their clips as well as using the wrong slots. Any uncertainty or questions should be addressed immediately by consulting a qualified technician. As traffic accidents are the major cause of death for passengers aged one to thirteen this is not something that should be put off.
While prudence inside the vehicle is critical; care around the vehicle is equally important. Cars, trucks and vans are magnets for children looking for a play area. If you have kids anywhere in the vicinity ensure you do a walk-around of your vehicle before you start your vehicle.
Make the whole year Child Passenger Safety Week.
