According to Food and Drug Administration officials they will soon be regulating many smartphone applications and other smartphone related devices.

The regulation will primarily focus on those apps that turn smartphones, like the iPhone, into "medical devices" such as blood pressure monitors and blood glucose meters.  Those apps which do not convert smartphones into "medical devices" will most likely remain unregulated by the FDA.

In general, the federal regulation of medical devices is important to the overall safety of consumers. From a consumer-realted perspective, FDA regulation my help prevent app developers and product manufacturers from introducing faulty devices into the market.

Do you think that the FDA should regulate these apps and products?
